Finding Your Style
For a while now I’ve been yearning to express more through my artwork. I was trying to find my style which can be difficult to do if you always go by the book when creating art. I found the most awesome book on finding your unique voice and tips for how to express it through art! The book is called The Artist Unique and I highly recommend it to anyone trying to find their unique style. When I got the book I was so entranced that I couldn’t put it down and I read the whole thing in two days! The book features mixed media techniques and interviews with fifteen artists. Truly amazing and inspirational!

A new line of canvases I’ve been working on will be in the shop soon!
Simplistic Design
My new line of canvases is featuring a more simplistic approach to design. I’ve been studying artsy books for years now and have been resonating the most with this approach: consider focusing on the features you like most about the subject you are painting and simplify your design to make those features the focus of the painting.
This work is the inspiration for a new approach in simplistic design, and although the background is detailed, the rose was created with a minimalist touch so that the lines describe the rose without overdoing it. If you are looking for new direction in your work make this idea your own and consider leaving out minute details and instead focus on the aspects of the subject that you are most drawn to.
Oil Pastels
Oil Pastels look great with watercolor. They are really bright, and the bold colors accent the more pale hues of watercolor. You can layer lighter colors over darker colors to produce stunning results, and they even make water soluable oil pastels which can act as a paint. Another way you can use oil pastels in a painting is to draw with oil pastels and then paint over the top of the drawing. The drawing will remain in tact because the oil pastels resist watercolor paint. In this painting, the yellow line in the center of the street was applied over the top of the black wash.
Mixing Colors on the Paper
Mixing colors on the paper can produce gorgeous results! Wet down the paper and then paint two different colors next to each other. Either let the colors blend on their own or use your brush and blend the area where the two colors touch to create a third color.
Variegated Wash
Creating a variegated wash is really simple, and knowledge of this wash is most beneficial in watercolor painting. Simply paint colors next to each other, overlapping the edges of the different colors while the paint is still wet. You can see this wash in the foliage of the oak tree.
